Behind the Knee
Liposuction should never be done on the area behind the knee. This is due to this area hosting critical nerves and blood vessel that are likely to be injured in any attempt.
Care After Liposuction of the Legs
Those who undergo liposuction of the legs and ankles often experience swelling that can be a frustration. When “open drainage” is used, there is less swelling post operation, and if there is, it only lasts a few days. Open drainage is a technique that essentially, allows the incisions to drain because they are not closed by stitches.
Open Drainage
When open drainage is used, the surgeon uses a technique in which he makes “adits,” or tiny holes in the skin. These holes are 1mm to 1.5 mm, so very tiny. These are placed in the lower legs and on the ankles. This allows the area to drain, and significantly reduces any post-operative swelling or bruising. These holes are protected by absorbent pads, which are covered in turn by compression socks. These catch the drainage, and the coverings keep you safe from infection.
